Overview

Hippie de Bar is a distinctive bar-restaurant tucked off the main bustle of Khao San Road. Rather than being one of the full-on bars along the main strip, it offers a more relaxed, retro-vintage vibe with indoor and outdoor spaces (including a courtyard beer-garden) and draws a mixed crowd of locals, creatives and travellers.

About / Atmosphere

Once inside you’ll find vintage furniture, retro décor, knick-knacks and a leafy outdoor garden‐style seating area. The courtyard has ambient lighting and relaxed seating making it a nice escape from the loudest bars of Khaosan. It’s much more laid-back than many of its neighbours, which makes it appealing if you want to hang out with drinks and conversation rather than full-on dancing all night.

Music

The music at Hippie de Bar leans away from mainstream commercial club tracks and more towards indie, retro, Thai, 60s/70s/80s, rock, underground hip hop and alternative playlists. Live bands usually play at the weekend and local DJs spin tracks for a more discerning audience than the typical Khao San Road bar.

Food & Drinks

A full bar is available. Beers start from around 150 Baht, cocktails from about 280 Baht. Try some of their signature cocktails like the Hippy Lady and watch out for the buy-one-get-one-free deals.

The menu includes Thai staples such as chicken-basil rice, prawn fried rice, som tam, etc and is reasonably priced (mains around 200 Baht). The restaurant is popular with young Thai locals so you know the standard of food is better than the usual Khao San Road fare served to backpackers.

Hippie de Bar Highlights

  • The retro aesthetic, subdued lighting and vintage furniture give it a unique charm compared with the many generic bars on KSR.
  • The courtyard beer-garden offers a more relaxed outdoor space, which can be a relief from the street noise.
  • Good for mixing with locals and creative crowds, not purely backpackers.
  • A solid option if you want somewhere chill but still keep part of the Khao San buzz.

Best Times to Visit

  • Arrive early (say 5pm–7pm) if you prefer a quieter start and want to grab a good spot in the courtyard.
  • By late evening (10pm+), the atmosphere will pick up as the crowd grows. Weekends are busier so if you prefer fewer crowds go mid-week
  • If you want to watch football / sport with a drink outdoors, the garden area is ideal, especially for weekend matches.

Insider Tips

  • Watch out for the alley entrance: it’s tucked slightly off the main road with a more understated entrance that’s easy to miss.
  • Outdoor garden seats: If weather’s good, ask for a table in the courtyard. Early arrival helps.
  • Try a signature cocktail: ask the staff for whatever the current special is: the venue tends to highlight cocktail creativity.
  • Happy hour / drink specials: keep an eye out for promos that run from around 4/5pm until 8pm.
  • Food is fairly priced and generally more authentic than what is served in KSR.
  • Noise levels: although more relaxed than mega-bars, it still gets busy so expect some bar noise. If you want quieter conversation opt for earlier timing.
  • Service & crowds: service is actually very good but can slow when busy. The crowd is a young local + backpacker mix, great for meeting people or hanging out with friends.
